Wig & Breast Care Financial Assistance
At Roches, we are proud to be approved suppliers for the PRSI Allowance, HSE Allowance & Private Health Insurers. For the PRSI & HSE allowance, our dedicated team takes care of all the paperwork on your behalf, making the process as simple and stress-free as possible.
These financial allowances apply to wigs and breast care products required due to cancer treatment or alopecia. The specific allowances for each condition differ; please see further details below.
Allowances are available once per year and require a doctor’s letter or prescription to qualify. Further information on each allowance is available below.

Thanks to recent updates, allowances for those with a cancer diagnosis are now standardised nationwide. They are no longer dependent on medical card status or the individual’s home address, ensuring fair and equal access for everyone. (January 2025)
Wigs Allowances
Government support is available for wigs needed due to chemotherapy or alopecia through the HSE & the PRSI.
PRSI Wig Allowance
- Claim up to €500, yearly.
- Alopecia & cancer related hair loss.
- Based on your PRSI contributions.
- Medical letter/prescription required.

HSE Wig Allowance
- Alopecia related hair loss can claim from €440, yearly.
- Cancer related hair loss can claim up to €770, yearly*.
- No medical card is required for cancer related hair loss, but is needed for alopecia related hair loss.
- Medical prescription/letter required.

Private Health Insurance
- Most private health insurers provide cover towards wigs, you should contact your insurer to find specific information related to your policy.

Breast Care Allowances
All women, in Ireland, post-mastectomy due to breast cancer can avail of a yearly allowance from the HSE.
This allowance has been recently reviewed and significantly improved. Previous to the review, this allowance was only available to medical card holders but now it is available to every woman post mastectomy surgery due to a cancer diagnosis, regardless of medical card status.
HSE Breast Care Allowance
- From €440 annually*.
- Yearly Allowance Covers:
- Breast Prosthesis
- Mastectomy Bras (x2)
- Swimsuit
- Swim Prosthesis
- Standardised nationwide with no medical card requirement.
